Windows Wednesday

Taken on Oak Street in New Orleans. This lady sat in her window all afternoon, scowling at the festival goers for the Oak Street Poboy Fest. We saw her again this year with a companion.

I wonder what she does for the other 364 days of the year?

Bead Town!!

Bead Town is the brainchild of Stephan Wagner from Germany.

Wagner came to Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated the area. He found a job in the much-needed construction activity. It was during this time that he fell in love with the area and her strong people.

"I remember thinking that it was right after Katrina-with 50% of the region destroyed and the other 50% helping those whose homes were destroyed, that was quite a challenge" he said. "So I moved on from construction and started putting beads together to capture the iconic images that make Louisiana so special: the food, the culture, the architecture....I was on a mission".

His mission has created so many beautiful things made with used Mardi Gras beads. Pictures are created by artists and Stephan - along with anyone willing to help - use the beads to create his magic.

The beads are applied to the pictures one at a time. Bead Town will be open to the public in Slidell through April 5th. From there the collection will travel to Denham Springs and many other Louisiana Main Street communities, each of which has a story to tell as part of the bigger city. In each city additional works have been or will be created which tells the community's tale.

Scuzzbucket of the Week

Ty Hickman of Jesup Iowa.

Ty Hickman was arrested Thursday night in Jesup and taken to Buchanan County Jail. A Waterloo code enforcement officer, Maria Tiller, says Hickman is charged with a misdemeanor charge of animal torture. Online court records don't list the name of Hickman's attorney.

The carcass and kennel were found February 16 on the east side of Waterloo. Waterloo Animal Control says the carcass was covered in feces and urine and it looks like the dog died of starvation or dehydration.

A reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction had reached $7,500. Tiller says tips from the public led to the arrest.

I hope this pig rots in hell.

Update March second: he was released from jail last night and didn't have to pay any bail to get out :( more than likely there will be more arrest to follow! His "friends" rolled on him (more than likely for the reward) and that is why we need high reward amounts for future cases like this, money talks!!!!

Windows Wednesday

This is one of the stained glass windows hanging in St. Genevieve Church in Bayou Liberty

According to an elderly parishioner, these particular windows hung in one of the original St. Genevieve Churches circa 1852. This lady remembers going to church not via horse or car, but by paddling up Bayou Liberty

A new LOW

I have been caught by some of the "headlines" from the satirical website The Onion . They are usually well-done, witty and really do catch you doing a double take

But the Onion reached a new low in internet blogging when they referred to Beasts of the Southern Wild's child star, 9 year old Quvenzhan Wallis as a cunt. She's 9 years old. Some one - perhaps a 18 year old drunken college student - decided that this was an easy thing to do to make other 18 year old college students laugh.

I have to admit I turned the Oscars off before the opening monologue was done due to the sophmoric comments made by the 'host' Seth McFarlane. Then I realized that this person is responsible for the show "family guy" or whatever it's real name is. I watched the program once. It's sophmoric. It's the first word I come up with. Most older people (i.e. over 50) don't get into this kind of humor. It's so ......... teenaged, 20-something. I can't identify with it.

Stooping to calling a 9 year old girl a cunt is the lowest of low.

Sure they "apologized" for it. But they really didn't mean it. To them it was funny.

Glad I'm not them.

Bayou Beauty

I was lucky enough to have my camera with me on this day in March 2007.

The Sun Room

The past several weeks have been more gloomy than sunny. The ground is saturated and it's difficult to play with my "throw the ball" Labrador in the yard without him becoming a muddy mess. So I improvise and we play ball in the house, which entails using nasty, slimy balls that leave snail trails on the floors. I refuse to wash the floors until this rainy spell is over because it would just be a waste of time.

To help pass the time during these gray days, I decided to spend some time in the Sun Room and spruce it up in anticipation of a sunny Spring. So I introduce you to my Sun Room through pictures.

This is the entrance to my room of windows.

This stunning seashell hanging was purchased in Biloxi before Katrina.

I have collected so many shells and driftwood, I decided that the Sun Room would have a "beach" theme.

After years of not having enough space, I have found a place for all my suncatchers!

This beauty was created by New Orleans artist of found object folk art Lance Vargas

The driftwood is safely tucked away from the dog!

This piece - found in Fountainbleau State Park - looks like a gator

An homage to our last trip to Dauphin Island

This piece was found in my husband's mothers house - a minnow trap. I'm looking for a spot to display it

I found this stool/table on Overstock dot com. Made in Vietnam, it's real slices of wood

Big Sam approves of the new cushions.

I can hardly wait for the warmer, sunnier days of Spring to let this room shine in all her beauty!
