Frontier Flight Attendant Describes Duct Taping Passenger To Chair - Hil...

RIP Action Jackson

Sadly, I only discovered Action Jackson on '0z in the summer of 2020, when I was caught in a rainstorm on the I10 twin span.  It was scary raining:  heavy and fast!  But Action's choice of MoTown songs had me feeling less nervous about the crazy weather and traffic.

From WWOZ's Facebook page, August  8, 2021

Action Jackson has become an ancestor at the age of 59. Action was a beloved long-time WWOZ show host best known for his work on Takin' It To The Streets, WWOZ's multi-platform, award-winning program celebrating New Orleans' social aid & pleasure clubs, second lines, Black Masking Indians of Mardi Gras, Baby Dolls, and brass band traditions.

Action also hosted the late night blues show from Thursday night to Friday morning on WWOZ for several years, first from 3-6am and then from 12-3am. In the summer of 2020, he moved to host the Thursday afternoon blues show from 2-4pm each week. WWOZ listeners recognized Action from his always enthusiastic greeting, “It’s ya boy!” and everyone in the second line and masking communities knew him.

He passed August 8, 2021 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Action will be greatly missed by all at WWOZ and within the cultural communities in New Orleans. He is survived by his loving family. Arrangements have not yet been announced.

RIP Sam Jasper

Sam Jasper loved and fought for the people of New Orleans.  She was their cheerleader.

Sam was strong, opinionated and a had  great style as a writer AND as a person.

I discovered Sam in the aftermath of Katrina in 2005.  Her blog "Katrina Refrigerator" was one of MANY that detailed New Orleans residents' fight for survival and recovery.

In 2010, for Katrina's 5 year anniversary, Sam and another great New Orleans Blogger - Mark Folse - combined forces and chose the best of the best from NOLA Bloggers' writing in Katrina's aftermath.  They described the book as "An Anthology of Writing from PostDiluvian New Orleans"

Sam leaves behind her loving husband and beautiful daughter.  And a legacy that enriches the understanding of the real New Orleans.
