Good Commuter News

The Chef Pass bridge has been closed since Hurricane Katrina undermined the banks that supported the bridge.

This is probably little news to denizens of New Orleans. But for us northshore commuters, it's a wonderful thing. The morning and evening commutes over the east side of the lake can be a nightmare some days. Post Katrina it's a little worse because of the lowered speed limits on the twin spans.

All it takes is one crazed commuter to drive carelessly and cause an accident, which could gum up the flow of traffic for hours. If this happens after this Friday, at least Highway 90 is available as an alternative. Before last August, Highway 90 was an easy, interesting way to traverse Lake Pontchartrain. I haven't seen it since last year, but I believe it is a whole lot different now. I cross the lake via Highway 11 and have seen very few lights in the area of Highway 90 since Katrina. We shall have to see.

My thanks to the State Department of Transportation and Boh Brothers.

A careful inventory of all your past experiences may disclose the startling fact that everything has happened for the best.

A smile from Katrina Land

Being a cat lover, I gravitate towards stories like this.

Just shows to go you, you can go home again....at least cats can.

Thanks, Tim.

"He can just bite me"

Here's a link to the story

Some excerpts

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Mississippi congressman hit back at Michael Brown on Thursday after the former FEMA director described him as "that little twerp."

"Brown is an incompetent fool, and everyone in South Mississippi knows it," said Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Miss.

In a Playboy magazine interview, the fallen Federal Emergency Management Agency chief took issue with Taylor for harshly questioning him during a hearing into the government's sluggish response to Hurricane Katrina last year.

"He said I didn't recognize the death and suffering that was going on," Brown said of Taylor.

"For that little twerp to claim I didn't recognize death and suffering — he can just bite me, for all I care," Brown told Playboy.

I just wish Mr. Brown's head would explode and we'd be done with the asshole.

Getting Close to that time

It's close to that time of year again...the busy part of hurricane season.

I guess the recent spate of thunderstorms in the area during the past two
weeks, coupled with this article in the T-P today got me thinking
about this season.

Nash Roberts was the best! I remember tuning into the 10 o'clock news during summers
past (ten plus years ago) and KNOW there was a serious storm out there when Nash was
doing the weather forecast. Nash with his magic markers and stumbling delivery.
He may not have been as "pretty and smooth" as meteorologists today, but he was a damn good forecaster. Still is, as the article in the T-P shows. Nash didn't need all the newfangled tools available to todays weather forecasters. He did his own analysis - and I'm sure he looked at all of the models available at the time. But he went with his gut.

Hurricane season 2006 brings us some interesting weather men (easier to say than meteorologist...and spell, too).

Margaret Orr is too gushy and cutesy for me. That and she gets worked up
too easily. Nash never showed that much emotion.

Carl Arredondo (love saying his name) I like. He's professional and to the point. Although he's no Nash, I trust him.

Bob Breck....UGH! This little worm probably did a happy dance when he heard that
Nash was retiring. THEN he got that hideous hairpiece. I didn't like him pre-hairpiece and I dislike him even more now. It's not just the hairpiece, it's his
gigantic ego. I don't trust any of his forecasting either.

My man, Dan. I love Dan Milham. He's accurate, he's personable (for me) and
he seems to have to cool that Nash has/had.

Although I don't watch a lot of local TV weather anymore (my husband is a Weather Channel freak), during "the season" I tune in to the locals. Dan will be my man this year again. Unless WDSU chooses a younger, flashier weatherman. I hope not.

Riding home today, I looked at all the fema trailers along Highway 11 and wondered what would happen if anything stronger than a weak Cat One came through. I hope we don't have to deal with that this year.

Crime and Food

Thought I'd check out the "racist" St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office website
to see if there was any update in the status of the quadruple murder
in Slidell a few weeks ago.
Nada.

Update July 27th. Up to ten different drugs found in victims' bodies Surprised? Not me.

While I was there, I checked out the most wanted list. Jeesh, what a sleezy bunch there! Then I stumbled across an
interesting section of the website. You can find out crime statistics for your neighborhood by type of crime and how it compares
to last year. Pretty cool. Good place to go to check out a neighborhood if you're house hunting or if you're
just plain curious like me.

Onto another website, I decided to check out the tropics. They look pretty quiet out there.

Getting my evacuation boxes ready. Sure hope we don't have to use them. We even have
a case of MRE's upstairs (I know, who doesn't?). I don't like the idea of evacuating with
five cats, but if we have to, then we will. The bad thing about leaving for hurricanes is that
you don't know which direction to go (except north) until it's close to landfall (in most cases). I don't think I'll dwell on that
right now. I'd rather think about good food.

My honey and I went to the Covington Farmers' Market a few weeks back then went to lunch at
the Cheese Steak Bistro
on Columbia.
Excellent sandwiches there. They're open Monday-Saturday till 2 or 3
in the afternoon. It's worth the trip. (985) 875-9793.

And if you hang around after lunch, browsing all the neat shops in Covington, go to dinner at
DiChristina's Restaurant down the street at 810 N. Columbia (985-875-0160).
Opened by members of the family that operated Rocky & Carlo's in Chalmette, DiCristina's serves big portions of Creole-Italian comfort food.

Allstate STILL Sucks

Since the beginning, we've heard nothing but horror stories
about insurance companies. Allstate has taken scumsucking
to a new level

Orphan Boats

While perusing my favorite blogs last week, I ran across this post which started my wheels turning. Seems that there is still a whole bunch of unclaimed boats all over the area. I know that I must see more than a dozen
on my commute to and from work via Highway 11.

img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Am1iG0CX-U8/Wa8mcxGvFQI/AAAAAAAAGpo/19iJyAbVOBs3squfMzjDYeikevx2nWPxwCHMYCw/Blog%2BImport%2B2017-09-05%2B-%2Borphan14.jpg%2B-%2Befcbe887c785434e9249c42adc7db0ec" width="400" border="0" />

The complete set of my "orphaned boats" can be found here.

So I set out Saturday morning and drove around my immediate area, digital camera in hand and took some interesting pictures.

During my ride, I snapped a few other pictures of "recovery" (or lack of) from Katrina, almost 11 months later.

the "world famous" Irish Bayou Truck Stop and Casino (still not open)

Recovery IS happening, but not as fast as the rest of the country thinks it is. Listening to the radio last week, I heard someone say that Slidell's back to normal. I wonder where they were looking?

Thursday, July 20, 2006

Hey! Mr. A.G.!

Charles Foti, what the hell are you up to?

You have arrested three people for the "murder" of patients in the wake of Katrina's destruction. You should be charged with the destruction of New Orleans, along with that assclown Ray Nagin.

You are alleging charges of abuse on these medical personnel that you yourself are guilty of.

You're a hypocrite, Chuck.

And a publicity hound, Chuck
. Face it.

What about Willie Fontenot?
Why was he fired, Chuck?

I hope you lose this one, Chuck.

Wednesday, July 19, 2006

Oh, no!

July 19th, 2006

What would you do?

The Louisiana Attorney General is pursuing charges against a doctor and two nurses for " the second-degree murder of four unidentified patients" which brings the post Katrina emotional roller coaster ride back down the hill.

The alleged "murders" took place during the days after Katrina laid waste to New Orleans via the levee breaks. Several New Orleans' hospitals had critically ill patients which were not able to be evacuated.

Who the fuck is Foti to judge? I know, it's his job and all, but not one of us knows how we would react if put in the situation the doctors and nurses that stayed behind for Katrina were in.

If Foti and company succeed in prosecuting these people, will they go after FEMA, who stopped several rescue operations due to their inability to do their jobs?

Will they go after Kathleen Blanco for being an ineffective leader in times of crisis?

Will they go after Ray Nagin for the long list of mistakes he made, including the infamous flooded busses?

Good Lord, so many people died because of mistakes made. I don't see any good coming of this.

I'm sorry the people in the hospitals died, whatever the cause. But dragging this into the spotlight will only bring on or strengthen the rampant Katrina-related depression going on down here.

Go after the real criminals, Mr. Attorney General.

A Good News Day!

Wow. Despite all the doomsday things going on in this area, there's a few good things in the news.

granting up to $20 million dollars to repair the superdome.

The new Twin Spans project is being completely funded with Federal dollars.

The New Orleans east landfill on Chef Hwy will be closed down.
Hooray for the citizens that worked so hard to kill this project!!!

Police have arrested the young man responsible for gunning down five teens in New Orleans last month. Isn't he a nice looking young man? Think his mom is proud of him?

Time for me to get my act together and head on down to Cajun Country. Bringing my baby girl to Thibodaux to check out the dorm rooms in Nicholls State University. sniff-sniff!!! My baby's going to the "Harvard on the Bayou". LOL!!!

Someday we'll look back at this......

New webpage!!! Inspired by New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin. Click here to go there

Who voted for this ass?

July 12, 2006

Why did people vote for this ass????

I just caught word from one of my friends who works as a lobbyist in the Louisiana State Legislature of another gloriously stupid move made by Sugar Ray Nagin. He recently sent bags of Oreos to a handful of African-American politicians who supported Mitch Landrieu in the Mayoral election... including Karen Carter and Ann Duplessis among others.

from The American Zombie blog

I just have to start a Ray-Ray webpage to document all his moves.

Professional Journalism

July 11th, 2006
"Professional" Journalism

I listened to an interview on WWL this morning with Jack Strain. He mentioned that there was a lot more said by him and that WDSU (Channel 6) just aired what they thought was "news worthy". Riiiight!!!!

I emailed WDSU this morning, asking the possiblility of getting a copy of the entire transcript of his interview. Here's their response:

JUDY,
WE DON'T GIVE OUT TRANSCRIPTS. YOU CAN PURCHASE A TAPE OF THE NEWSCAST THE STORY AIRED IN.. BY CONTACTING TARGET VIDEO AT 504-456-6747. ONCE YOU HAVE THE TAPE YOU CAN TRANSCRIBE THE COMMENTS THAT AIRED. AND WE DO NOT TRANSCRIBE ENTIRE INTERVIEWS, ONLY THE PARTS THAT WE USE, SO THERE IS NO VERBATIM OF EVERYTHING THE SHERIFF SAID. THE TAPE IT WAS SHOT ON WOULD HAVE BEEN RECORDED OVER WITHIN 3 DAYS AFTER IT WAS SHOT.
SORRY.. ___________ -WDSU ASSIGNMENTS MANAGER

Isn't that special?

Anyway, here's the audio from Jack Strain's interview on WWL this morning:
Click on the link 'Bob DelGiorno goes one on one w/Jack Strain 7/11/06'

From the Times Picayune, 7-08-2006:

The ACLU said it has received complaints from Nazarene Christians, who "wear dreadlocks as a religious requirement" and are afraid to step outside their St. Tammany homes for fear of being arrested.

Puh-leez!!
Jack Stone, the Headquarters Operations Officer with the church called in WWL Radio this morning to set the record straight. He stated that there is no religious requirement in his church for dreadlocks, no kids ever showed up at their camp with dreadlocks and there is no metion of dreadlocks in the Church of Nazarene's manual and the ACLU should check their facts.

This smells like a set up to me. Next thing you know we'll be seeing the likes of these guys

I sincerely wish all these rabble rousers would go find a REAL cause to support and leave this area alone to rebuild.

Or perhaps they can use their communication skills to tell all these young men who are returning to the area to wreak havoc to straighten up their act and help rebuild or go back to where they came from.

No, I'm not a racist. I speak from the plain facts. My eyes are wide open. I live here.

Speaking of young men, the NOLA police have noted that there are plenty of underage kids being
picked up in the Quarter way after curfew. A lot of these kids came back to this area without their parents. Imagine that.

Enough.......

Today sucks

July 8th, 2006

Some days just suck more than others

~sigh~
After Katrina and the levees devastated New Orleans, after we cried for a month, after we screamed out our anger at the government, a tiny light began to shine in the back of my mind....maybe, just maybe this is a chance for New Orleans to come back as a newer, cleaner, better place!! Out of a bad thing could come a good thing.

But no. Here's where the city is 10+ months post Katrina.

Glad I live in St. Tammany.

At least our sheriff and judicial system don't fuck around. Listen to the piece here

Now you can take it as "racist" or you can take it as a man fed up with the increase in crime here in St. Tammany. I don't care how you take it.

Worth it?

July 7th, 2006

Worth It? I think so

The question I've heard a lot this week - since the successful launch of the Space Shuttle - is "is all of this worth it?" Many people fail to recognize how much space exploration has benefited everyday lives. I did a search on the NASA website "Spinoff". and I've compiled a list - not a complete list, mind you - of some of the ways that space exploration has contributed to the lives of millions of people. You can go to that website (link above) and do a search to find more info to any of these items, and any other that you can think of. Happy exploration!!

Summertiiiiime

July 6, 2006

Our drought here in SE Louisiana is slowly waning. Rained all weekend for the fourth. We did manage to catch 5-Finger Discount Band at the Mandeville Seafood Fest. They sounded good as usual. After they played the skies opened up and we decided to make our way back to Slidell.

Had a wild ride home from work yesterday in the rain. It was blinding-coming-down-sideways rain. This area hasn't seen rain like this since The Storm

Gause Boulevard in Slidell flooded, as is the norm.

We're getting close to the peak of the hurricane season, which is from late July thru September. Here's a link to a new, very impressive storm tracking website IbisEye dot com.

Not only does it track hurricanes, but it also gives you info on the latest weather alerts nation wide. A true weather junkie's dream.

We were driving down Bayou Liberty Road over the weekend. It was gray and overcast which made the scenery that much more depressing. Only one or two houses that are located on Bayou Liberty are occupied. The rest are gutted and just sitting there. Thanks, Katrina
